Various sections of Delhi registered an air quality index exceeding 500, which represents ten times the recommended limit recommended by the WHO.

In some locations, readings of PM2.5 and PM10 reached peaks of 1,800, amounting to 15-20x exceeding safe levels.

Fireworks Restrictions and New Policy Shifts

Since 2020, officials had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of fireworks during Diwali due to their substantial impact to the deadly haze that covers the metropolis as the cold season approaches.

Yet in recent months, the current regional leadership appealed to the highest court to seek a relaxation of the restrictions.

They proposed allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – historically criticized by environmentalists as being only approximately one-third less polluting – as a middle ground between "tradition and environment".

Legal Verdict and Implementation

To the disappointment of medical and ecological campaigners, the court agreed to the request, mandating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be set off during limited periods throughout the Diwali.

During the celebrations, there was considerable violation of the time restrictions across the city, with minimal regulation regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the eco-friendly variety.

Numerous monitoring devices throughout the city showed contamination spiking around the night hours to the most severe levels observed during Diwali in at least the past three years.

International Effects

Extensive ignition of pyrotechnics during Diwali also sparked a dispute with adjacent the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistan's Punjab pointing to deteriorating air quality in the city of Lahore on pollutants traveling from India following the celebrations.

Persistent Environmental Issue

Extremely elevated levels of pollution in Delhi have persisted as a serious issue for more than 15 years, with the situation showing no improvement.

During the festival period, the amount of hazardous particulate matter in the air has been observed to increase dramatically to significantly exceeding the peak records ever documented in the Chinese city, which was previously considered as the planet's dirtiest urban center.

Diverse Contamination Sources

This crisis in the capital is caused by a combination of multiple factors including automobile exhaust, construction debris, development work, waste incineration and pollutants from agricultural fires in adjacent states of neighboring agricultural zones.

Within these states, farmers routinely burn crop residue to expedite field preparation, creating hazardous haze that remains stagnant over the capital as cooler air descends.

Medical and Economic Toll

The economic and health consequences on the approximately 33 million residents calling home the capital region is significant, according to numerous studies.

These hazardous conditions causes increased incidence of neurological, cardiovascular and breathing disorders, and can even lead to malignancies.

Air quality crisis is calculated to be causing 10,000 early deaths each year in Delhi.
