Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when numerous of them entered the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
